“Sir Purrs… what are you doing?”

He had hopped onto my counter as I was packing up the last box of goods to take to the square for the potion contest in a couple of hours. With a sigh, I pushed the box to the side because I knew Sir Purrs. He wouldn’t let up if he was in a mood.

“Waiting for my daily rubs. You’ve been slacking lately.”

I watched as my familiar flopped down on his side, then rolled over, exposing his belly to me. “I haven’t been slacking, I’ve been busy.”

He meowed, then looked at me. “Still. You have been lacking. Get to rubbing. I demand belly rubs.”

Sir Purrs was on his ‘think he’s better than everyone’ mess today, but I obliged him. I reached in slowly just in case he instantly changed his mind and decided to maul my hand and arm. He didn’t and I let out a sigh of relief that I didn’t realize I was holding. He closed his eyes as my fingers slid through his soft fur and began to purr really loud. There was a reason I named him what I did. It was like a motorboat. I continued to pet him while giving him belly rubs.

“Aww, did you feel neglected, my little feline overlord? Well, I promise to do better. I’m going to the potion contest. Would you like to tag along?”

Sir Purrs-A-Lot opened one eye and stared at me. “Yes. There’s something new in town and I want to get a better look and sniff.”

“There’s a lot of something new in town until the solstice. You’re going to have to be a little more detailed, Fluff.”

Instantly I regretted calling him Fluff. His claws of mass destruction quickly unsheathed and gleamed with a deadly sheen before they latched onto my flesh. There was no warning growl or hiss. I didn’t have time to move my arm in time.

“Dang it, Purrs! You didn’t have to maul my hand again. Can you give a girl a warning or something when you’re tired of the petting?”

He meowed, then growled, and hissed before he hopped up and jumped off the counter. I wondered if they had like mood drugs for cats. Maybe I could come up with a mood stabilizer potion for the cat. Maybe he would be nice to people other than me. With a chuckled, I thought better of it. Sir Purrs was a force of nature. He would be able to figure it out long before I even gave him the stuff. While happy thoughts of how I was going to get my revenge on the furry overlord filled my head, I hurried to the back where my restroom was located. I shoved my hand in the sink and turned on the cold water and washed off my hand and arm, cleaning it of the tiny rivulets of blood that fell down. It stung a bit, but it wasn’t anything major. I would be alright. Being mauled was just a hazard to being the witch to a magical feline.
